This data visualization shows LinkedIn’s list of top companies for the year 2018. LinkedIn publishes this list every year. Here is the list for 2017. This list is one of its kind which is based on the actions of the LinkedIn’s users. It mainly depends on the metrics like Job demand, Engagement with the company, Interest in its employees and Retention. Cutting long story short, this is a list of the companies which are attracting new talents and retaining their existing talent by taking care of them.
Why this visualization? What problem does it solve?
You may ask what was the need for this visualization when all the information was already available? LinkedIn Top Companies 2018 is a group of 8 articles. Each article lists the top 25 (50 for US) companies for a particular country. The list is available for US, Canada, Brazil, UK, France, Germany, India, and Australia. To view all the information you have to go to each article and scroll through the long content. What if all this information was available in one place?
Yes, this visualization does exactly that. The information from all the 8 articles can be visualized on one screen and can be compared with just a few clicks. The viz shows a world map with circles on it representing the countries in the list. On the right side, the logos of the top 25 companies are shown. As the US has 50 companies on its list, the next set of 25 companies (rank 26 to 50) can be viewed by using the radio button at the top right corner of the list. On hovering a logo, you can see the company’s name, its current rank, previous rank, industry sector and its global employee count. The previous rank is from LinkedIn Top Companies 2017 article.
How I made it look good?
Just showing the list of companies for each country would be boring. So, I thought it would be a good idea to make the visualization more visually appealing. Below are the things I did.
- Blended the map’s background with the visualization’s background so that it will look like one view.
- Instead of creating a text list, I collected the logos of all the companies (this was tougher than I thought) and displayed them as a list.
- I found a nice image which was going good with the viz background. Placed it at the bottom after making small changes to it.
- At the top left corner, added a small text description and placed it on the map with a slightly transparent background. This again blended well.
